your daily dosage of real sports around the rim . . . 02/18/08 | by the shadow | categories: baseball a few random thoughts on the world of basketball as we know it: while some might not have agreed with it, we thought lebron james was more than deserving of mvp honors during last night’s nba all-star game in new orleans. eastern conference teammate and boston celtics shooting guard ray allen (game-high 28 points) certainly made a strong push at the end for the honor, knocking down several critical 3-pointers and foul shots to help the east hold on for a 134-128 victory over the west. and, provided that the west was able to complete a furious fourth-quarter rally to win the game, one certainly could have made an argument for hometown favorite chris paul (16 points, game-high 14 assists), who was arguably the best player on the floor in the last period. however, when looking at the game in its totality, it’s hard to argue against james, who finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in one of the most complete performances in recent nba all-star game history. in fact, while allen’s dead-eye shooting was spectacular down the stretch, most will likely remember the flat-out ridiculous drive and dunk over three defenders james had in the final minute that snapped a 125-125 tie and gave his team the lead for good. it wouldn’t surprise us if james breaks the record for most all-star game mvp awards – he already has two and the record is four – along the way to surpassing a few more legendary marks before his playing career is done. superman was in the building saturday night in new orleans, both literally and figuratively speaking. orlando magic center dwight howard put on quite a display to win the nba slam dunk contest, including donning a cape and unveiling a superman body shirt during a spectacular throw down that garnered him a perfect score of 50. howard’s showing in the competition ranks with vince carter’s in 2000 at oakland as the greatest and most innovative the slam dunk contest has seen. the fact that he jumps as well as any of the game’s best leapers yet stands 6-foot-11 makes howard appear, well, super human (pun intended). he followed saturday night’s dazzling display with a solid performance in the all-star game (16 points, nine rebounds) that featured one monster slam after another. in our opinion, howard is every bit the phenom that james is, maybe even more so considering that he plays a position that has seen very few, if any, prospects that rival his unique athleticism. and like james, he’s not just a freak athlete, but he’s also a productive talent, having averaged 21.7 points, 2.4 blocks and a league-leading 14.6 rebounds through the all-star break. we have personally gone out and watched most of the top high school basketball players in the country for the last 20 years, and howard ranks with james, amare stoudamire, kobe bryant and carmelo anthony as the best we have seen. howard just had the misfortune of graduating from high school the year after james, which, because of all the hype that the latter received, kept most scouts and observers from giving the center his just due as a prospect. we’d like to go on the record now in saying that howard, provided he doesn’t suffer any significant injury, will be remembered as one of the three greatest centers of all time and, quite possibly, the best ever. we’re not sold on jason kidd’s trade to the dallas mavericks – assuming it goes through – will be the over-the-hump move the team needs to win a nba championship. dallas still has a major hole at the center position and the three teams it figures to compete with out west for a finals berth – san antonio, phoenix and the los angeles lakers – don’t have the same problem. in addition, the three teams we mentioned all have point guards who range from future hall of famer (steve nash of phoenix) to all-star caliber (san antonio’s tony parker) to fundamentally solid (derek fisher of the lakers), and none of them figure to get rattled by seeing kidd in an opposing uniform. how in the world did cleveland not make a significant move toward acquiring sacramento point guard and sharp shooter mike bibby? the atlanta hawks, who traded for bibby last week, didn’t throw any real value at the kings to get the deal done. and bibby’s acquisition probably guarantees that the hawks, who will be one of the better teams in the east in the second half of the season, will make the playoffs for the first time in nine years. however, imagine for a second what bibby would have meant to the cavs? with he and second-year guard daniel gibson on the floor together, teams could ill-afford to double team james without fear of giving up a wide-open jump shot to two of the better shooters in the league. this would have allowed james more single coverage in the team’s half-court sets, which is lights out for the opposition because no one, and we repeat, no one can stop james one-on-one. while most pundits thought that the cavaliers would make a push for kidd, who is a good friend of james, we thought the bibby move would have made more sense because of his shooting ability and range. cleveland already has a kidd-like playmaker in james, who could have averaged a triple-double over the remainder of the season if he had a shooter like bibby to convert his passes on dribble penetration into made jump shots. the only thing uglier than last night’s 56-46 by ucla over cross-town rival usc was the stat line put up by trojans’ diaper dandy o.j. mayo. the 6-5 point guard had four points, nine rebounds and 10 turnovers, hardly the type of numbers one would expect from a player of mayo’s caliber in a game of such importance. usc (15-9, 6-6) has done a standup job this season despite being decimated by injuries and playing one of the tougher schedules in the country. however, right now, the trojans are a bubble team with five games remaining on their slate – home against oregon, stanford and cal and on the road at arizona and arizona state – they could very easily lose. speaking of mayo, we were just wondering: how good would he and kansas state be if he had decided to go to school there instead of usc? think about it for a sec? mayo in a lineup with super frosh mike beasley and former aau running mate bill walker? the wildcats, who are currently in contention for the big 12 conference title and a legitimate top-15 team, would probably be among the best three or four teams in the country with the dynamic mayo on the perimeter working in tandem with their inside force of beasley and walker. in addition, mayo would have a lot less pressure on him to carry a program, which seems to be burdening him now carrying a usc team that lacks consistency throughout the rest of its lineup. simply put, mayo and beasley would have been the best freshmen 1-2 punch the college game has ever seen. leave a comment • trackback (0) • -- heat turn up lakers-suns rivalry 02/06/08 | by the shadow | categories: baseball well, what do you know? it seems like hollywood isn’t the only place where horror movies come to life in the nba. just days removed from watching their western conference and pacific division rival los angeles lakers shake things up among the league’s hierarchy by acquiring memphis all-star pau gasol, the phoenix suns seem set to deliver their own we’re-trying-to-win-a-championship-now move by latching on to ‘the diesel,’ as in future hall of fame center shaquille o’neal. talk about trying to upstage the competition on the red carpet? phoenix adding shaq is akin to a car enthusiast putting a ferrari engine in a hummer. in other words, the suns’ speed now combined with shaq’s size makes them a pretty formidable force, provided that the latter doesn’t show up on a bum tire. and that lakers-suns rivalry that currently ranks as the most heated in the league? consider that thing to be at inferno level at this point, for a number of reasons. one, you had to believe the lakers were loo
